Le Mans Métropole: A Pioneer in Energy Transition

Located in the department of Sarthe in France, Le Mans Métropole stands out as a trailblazer in energy transition in France. Committed to profoundly transforming its energy landscape by 2050, the metropolis aims for a significant reduction in energy consumption and a substantial increase in production from renewable and recovery sources.

Foundations of the Solar Plan

Central to this transformation, Le Mans Métropole’s solar plan is based on a strategic collaboration between Cénovia and See You Sun. These partners jointly created two dedicated subsidiaries: Le Mans Sun and Le Mans Autoconsommation. The goal of these entities is to facilitate energy transition by supporting both public and private stakeholders in implementing innovative projects harnessing solar energy.

Key projects include the installation of photovoltaic canopies on underutilized sites such as industrial wastelands, parking lots, and building rooftops. These installations not only generate clean electricity but also enhance the value of often neglected spaces. The innovative economic model adopted, known as third-party financing, provides an attractive solution for landowners by eliminating the need for initial investment while ensuring ongoing maintenance of the installations.

Environmental and Economic Impact

The current achievements of Le Mans Sun and Le Mans Autoconsommation are remarkable. To date, these subsidiaries have installed around forty photovoltaic canopies in Sarthe, aiming to generate approximately 6800 MWh of electricity per year. This production not only reduces dependence on fossil fuels but also avoids emitting 3333 tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to 1904 round trips between Paris and New York, and offsets carbon like over 221,000 trees.

In terms of area, these projects will cover a total of 30,000 m² of solar panels, approximately equivalent to 4.5 football fields. This solar infrastructure is not only a source of green energy but also a demonstration of Le Mans Métropole’s commitment to a sustainable and energetically autonomous future.

Mid-term Vision and Objectives

A 25% reduction in energy consumption by 2030 is the target set by Le Mans Métropole’s energy master plan. It also aims for 33% of final electricity consumption to be covered by renewable energies. These targets significantly exceed current regulatory standards and reflect a deep commitment to accelerate and anticipate climate challenges.

Jacques Gouffé, CEO of Cénovia and Vice-President of Le Mans Métropole overseeing energy transition, also underscores the tangible impact of these initiatives: «This project has already provided electricity equivalent to the consumption of 3000 inhabitants, with an ambition to reach 30,000 inhabitants by 2026.» These achievements mark not only significant progress towards energy sustainability but also serve as a model for other regions to follow.

Strategic Partnerships with Huawei and Green Power for Optimal Implementation

A key aspect of the success of these projects lies in strategic collaborations with companies such as Huawei and its value-added partner Green Power, providers of photovoltaic solutions and inverters for essential commercial and industrial solar projects. The Huawei inverters from the 30/36/40 KTL series, deployed as part of these initiatives, are distinguished by their optimal energy efficiency, reliability, flexibility, and ability to integrate advanced energy management technologies. These characteristics make them preferred choices for small and large-scale solar projects worldwide.

Alexandre Guérin, CEO and Technical Director of See You Sun, emphasizes the importance of these collaborations: «The Green Power solutions we found with Huawei have enabled us to effectively meet the electrification needs of our projects. Today, we have nearly 5000 sites to deploy, and Green Power is the ideal partner for this mission.»

These partnerships illustrate not only the necessity of close cooperation between public and private sectors to realize projects of this magnitude but also the importance of technological innovation in overcoming the challenges of energy transition.

A Promising Future for Le Mans Métropole

In conclusion, Le Mans Métropole positions itself as an exemplary leader in energy transition in France. Through initiatives like Le Mans Sun and Le Mans Autoconsommation, the region demonstrates its commitment to transforming its energy supply to meet the challenges of climate change. With clear objectives, a well-defined strategy, and strong partnerships, Le Mans Métropole is forging a promising future, not only for its residents but also as an inspiring model for other communities worldwide.
